Club History

Origin and Early History

The history of this club actually began in 1979-1980 when (L.O.) Andy Andrews and his wife Jean were living in Grand Forks, N.D. The South Grand Forks Golden K Kiwanis Club invited him to speak at two of their meetings.

He was greatly impressed by that club of 50 members whose work had never allowed them time to join a service club. They came early, had good programs and stayed late to socialize.

When Floyd Christianson, then Secretary of the Minnesota-Dakotas Kiwanis District, learned that Andy and Jean were to move soon to New Brighton, he asked Andy if he would be interested in helping organize a Golden K Club in the Twin Cities area. Andy agreed. They moved in August, 1980.

The initial group of members in the new club were professionals, managers, entrepreneurs, executives and high level technical and sales persons. Many of them, during their working years, did not have an opportunity to belong to a service club. Many had traveled extensively or the demands of their profession or employment frequently did not permit them to attend regular meetings or get involved in outside activities. The new club offered new opportunities.

The club attained the required enrollment of 25 members and on December 15, 1981, was officially organized. Kiwanis International granted the club a charter which was presented to the membership on February 27, 1982.
